What to put in a freelance scope of work
Most scope creep isn't a client being difficult. It's two people who never wrote down what the job was. The client remembers the conversation one way, you remember it another, and the first time it matters is when you're already doing extra work for free.
A scope of work fixes that, and it doesn't need to be a contract. One page, sent before you start, that they reply "yes" to.
What's in
List the deliverables as things you can point at. "Five product pages, written and formatted for Shopify" beats "website copy". Include the number of revision rounds.
What's out
This is the section that saves you. Write down the obvious things you are not doing. "Doesn't include product photography, SEO keyword research, or uploading to the site." It feels awkward. It's the most useful paragraph on the page.
What a change costs
One sentence. "Anything outside this scope is quoted separately before I start it." Or a rate: "Extra pages are $120 each." Now when they ask for one more thing, you're not negotiating. You're pointing at something you both agreed to.
Get the yes in writing
End with: "If this looks right, reply yes and I'll start Monday." An email reply is enough.
Scope, Before You Start is this page, written and ready to fill in. One page, plain text included. $12, instant download.
Already mid-project and they asked for one more thing? The Change Order prices it without a fight. $12.
Or take all thirteen files for $29 once.
